How do I add members to a specific team(s) when they are already invited to my organization account

For any existing people who aren’t on teams but should be/would like to be, Chief Greenies can do this in two ways:

1) If you want to add members to one specific team, go to the relevant team admin page to which you wish to add them , click the “+“ button and paste in the member emails of the existing members you wish to add to the team.

2) If you want to add members to multiple teams, then go to the member section on your organization admin page click the “+” button, and then paste in the member emails with their specific team names. If you paste in from a spreadsheet, emails and team names should sit in 2 adjacent columns. If you are inputting manually, insert a comma between the email address and the team name.

Either option will send out invitations for those existing members to join the teams specified, or they can see invite on the bottom of their teams page.

Can people join more than one team

Yes people can be in any number of teams, both within one organization, and also within multiple organizations. Their score will show in each team, but they will only be counted once at organizational level.

Lots of my invitations are pending – what can I do

Pending invites are for people who you’ve invited to your organization but have not accepted that invite yet.

  1. If someone already has a Giki Zero account, but has not accepted your invite, they will be in pending invites with an avatar. These people simply need to go to the teams page (through green “Teams” button on top right of progress page), scroll down and “Accept invite”.
  2. If someone does not have a Giki Zero account, and has not accepted your invite, they will show in pending invites with initials. To help these people sign up:

It may be that their invitation is in their junk email folder so you could nudge them to check. When they find the email they just need to click on the invite link. Alternatively ask them to go to https://zero.giki.earth and create an account using the email address you invited them on. Once they sign up they can go to their teams page (through green “Teams” button on top right of progress page), scroll down and “Accept invite”.

Once people join a team, do their scores and savings automatically come with them

Yes, all of their savings and their score feed into the team. They do not ‘start from scratch’.

How long does it take for Giki to update the progress of a team

This happens immediately as we calculate changes in real time.

Can people remove themselves from a team

Only Chief Greenies (admins) can remove people from accounts and teams. To do so, select the name on the Organization admin page and then click on the bin icon at the top of the list.

Certain parts of the footprints or steps page do not apply to me – how do I deal with these

On your footprints page there are opt out options, for example, ‘I don’t fly’, or ‘I don’t use gas’. Alternatively, you can fill out the footprints for any services you don’t use, eg gas, oil, wood footprints to zero which will then mean that this feeds into your footprint and reduces it accordingly. For steps that are not relevant, you can click “Not for Me” and they disappear.

Does Giki Zero send regular email prompts

Giki Zero sends out emails approximately weekly to remind people of the steps they are trying and to share their successes, as well as to update on monthly challenges. These are a really important part of helping engagement and action. Some email filters will divert these emails to your spam, you can usually go into spam or junk and mark them as ‘not junk’.

(Occasionally company filters may block these emails – this can usually be resolved with your IT department)

When I take a step, does it update my footprint automatically

When you complete some of the steps in Giki Zero, they will have a direct impact on reducing your carbon footprint. As a result, when you complete these steps, you will be prompted by a pop up within Giki Zero to update your footprint. Click on the button, to go direct to the relevant footprint page to update it.

Why do some people get their own personal tracker on their progress page

On the Progress page (home screen) – when you commit to Cut a Tonne in ’21, this then triggers the personal tracker to pop up. Where an individual footprint is over the UK average of 9 tonnes, this will encourage you to reduce your footprint by 10%, as this is aligned with what is required to keep temperature rise below the all important 1.5 degrees Celsius. The tracker only appears where you have decided to go for the Cut a Tonne in ’21 goal.

What data can I download

Team progress summary: Change in scores for team

What scopes do you cover

Giki Zero’s carbon footprint tool has been built following the GHG Protocol’s Scope 1,2 & 3 emissions framework but then adapted for an individual.

Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources is covered in footprints such as: cars, wood, gas, motorbikes.

Scope 2: Indirect emissions is covered by footprints including electricity.

Scope 3 Upstream is covered by footprints including flight and other non-owned transport such as public transport as well as various footprints covering purchases such as clothing, electricals, furniture and food.

Scope 3 Downstream is covered by footprints covering recycling, food waste and financial services with particular focus on investment portfolios and banking.

Can I offset instead

Offsets are a temporary part of the solution but we all need to avoid and reduce carbon emissions to reach Net Zero. Our research suggests that people can currently reduce their carbon emissions to a level consistent with the Paris 1.5C goal but to reach Net Zero some nature based offsets are required.

As a result we do include nature based offsets, e.g. tree planting, but rather than look at the carbon sequestered over the lifetime of a tree, (which could be multiple decades, or hundreds of years) we match to a short term period that is aligned with the need to dramatically cut emissions this decade. This means that you need to plant more trees!

We don’t include offsets which are not nature based. If you are intending to use these types of offsets we suggest the following:

Consider the cost, if it’s just a few pounds per tonne does that make intuitive sense in terms of the true cost?

Follow the UN principles

  1. Additionality, would not have occurred without the financing from carbon offsetting.
  2. Verifiability, quantified and verified by an independent third party.
  3. Traceability, should be able to be tracked
  4. Performance, long-term, not temporary.
  5. Contribution to sustainable development

How do you measure land use

Land usage, measured in metres squared, is calculated for each of the Food footprints: diet; pet food and food waste. Footprints are calculated for a person based on consumption of different food groups which, in turn, are dependent on diet types. For example a typical diet will include meat and dairy consumption, which tend to require higher land usage, whilst a mainly plant based diet will have much lower land usage and so a lower land footprint as a result. Consumption is multiplied by a conversion factor per m2 for land which, in turn, are taken from academic meta studies which have reviewed a wide range of individual food LCAs studies.

Is there an app

Not at the moment. The website is built for mobile but many of our users access it on the desktop. Users can easily add a shortcut on their home screen if they would like Giki Zero to look like their other native apps.
